A woman accused of murdering her sister-in-law has been remanded into custody.
Mandeep Punia made a brief appearance in a Brampton courtroom Saturday morning, where her case was set aside until Tuesday.
On Friday Punia, 35, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Poonam Litt.
Litt's remains were discovered on Feb. 22, 2012, three years after she first disappeared from her Brampton home.
"It is just an initial appearance," defense attorney Deepak Paradkar said outside the courthouse Saturday. "We will wait for disclosure, which should take at least a month, and then we will make an application to the Supreme Court for bail."
Punia, who was dressed in a purple hooded sweatshirt, did not speak during Saturday's appearance, choosing to nod when she was asked if she understood the charges.
A Punjabi interpreter was brought in for the proceedings.
Approximately eight people identifying themselves as Litt's family filled the first two rows of the courtroom.
