EXCLUSIVE: Husband of murdered Brampton woman speaks out

A grieving husband is speaking out, after his sister and father were charged in the 2009 murder of his wife.

“Poonam is great. I never until this day, never said that Poonam was. I’ve been saying she is,” said Manjinder Litt in an exclusive interview with CityNews.

“Now that they’ve declared that she’s gone, I still can’t believe it.”

Litt’s sister, 35-year-old Mandeep Punia appeared in court for a bail hearing Saturday. She’s charged with second-degree murder in the death of Poonam Litt.

Punia’s estranged father Kulwant Singh Litt — also the victim’s father-in-law — has been charged with accessory after the fact. The 63-year-old had a bail hearing Friday.

Poonam Litt, then 27, was reported missing on Feb. 5, 2009 when she didn’t show up for work at a Brampton dental office.

Police allege Punia had killed her the day before. She was charged on Friday, a day after Peel police announced they had found Litt’s remains.

The owner of a bush lot in Caledon had come across the skeleton on Feb. 22.

“We’ve been living apart. We were always suspicious of them,” Litt said of his family.

Her lawyer Deepak Paradkar said Punia is obviously upset by the charges.

“She’s very distraught and depressed and very saddened by the charges and very concerned for her children and her family — her husband and her immediate family,” he said.

Punia and Kulwant Singh Litt will appear in court again next week.
