No grounds to charge officer in fatal shooting: SIU

STONEY CREEK, Ont. — Ontario's police watchdog says there are no grounds to charge a Hamilton police officer who fatally shot a man during a stolen vehicle investigation.
Special Investigations Unit director Ian Scott says the officer's use of lethal force was "legally justified" because there was reason to believe the suspect was dangerous.
The agency says the officer opened fire on Feb. 13 during an "interaction" between police and 27-year-old Phonesay Chanthachack.
It says police were conducting a criminal investigation in east Hamilton at the time and tried to stop a van.
Scott says interviews with witnesses suggested the van made contact with the officer around the time the first bullet was fired.
Chanthachack was taken to Hamilton General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
