6-yr-old girl snatched from own home found dead

6-year-old Sierra Newbold was reported missing on June 26 at 7:30 a.m. when police say her mother discovered her missing from her bedroom in West Jordan, Utah.
Just a half-hour later, investigators say they found the little girl’s body in an irrigation canal a block away from her home.
An autopsy confirmed that Sierra was “sexually assaulted and murdered,” West Jordan Police Chief Doug Diamond said in a press conference statement released on June 27. However, KSL reports Diamond said there was “not a significant amount of trauma on the body.”
The West Jordan Police Department said “no suspects have been identified,” and they “do not have any persons of interest.”
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Diamond said at a news conference last Wednesday “There’s obviously a predator out there. Unfortunately, we have people out there who are monsters.”
However, police said there is no need for the community to panic and they have increased police presence in the area, according to the police press conference statement. Parents were advised to “be vigilant and take normal precautions to protect their children and family members.”
The Salt Lake Tribune reports police have confirmed that they have captured images from surveillance video at the Newbold home. However, police won’t say exactly where in or around the home those cameras were located.
The Newbold Family said they are “devastated” and “grieving heavily about the loss of Sierra and the circumstances surrounding her death,” in a statement released on July 2. “We are cooperating fully with the police in the hope that the responsible person is ultimately arrested and prosecuted.”
As the investigation continues, police said they have numerous leads and their number one priority is to “identify, arrest, and successfully prosecute the person or persons responsible for this crime.”
“The hole left in our lives by her absence can never be repaired,” The Newbold family said.
Anyone with information regarding the murder of 6-year-old Sierra Newbold is encouraged to contact the West Jordan Police Department at 801-256-2211.
