TORONTO - Officers responding to a shooting outside a downtown nightclub opened fire on a fleeing vehicle and wounded two occupants early Sunday.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the incident, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. on CNE grounds.
The police watchdog says preliminary information indicates Toronto cops “observed and altercation” in the parking lot outside the Muzik nightclub.
“Officers heard gunshots and saw a car leaving the area,” the SIU said in a press release issued Sunday morning. “When the car failed to stop, officers discharged gunshots at the car.”
The vehicle came to rest a short distance away near the CNE’s Dufferin Gate.
Two of the three people inside the car suffered gunshot wounds and were rushed to St. Mike’s hospital, the SIU said.
Reports suggest a third gunshot victim was also found in the parking lot outside the club.
It’s believed two of the three shooting victims were seriously hurt and the third suffered life-threatening injuries.
Toronto Police aren’t talking because of the SIU’s involvement.
The SIU, which probes any serious injury or death involving police, has assigned seven investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.
