ORILLIA, ONT. - The mother of a 14-year-old boy and another adult are accused of child endangerment and providing alcohol to a minor after the teenager drowned in Lake Ontario.
The boy was visiting New York State's Fort Niagara State Park as part of a local War of 1812 re-enactment group that travelled to Old Fort Niagara when he went missing early Sunday morning.
The teen's body was found in five feet of water shortly after 9:00 a.m., about seven hours after he was last seen.
According to New York State Parks Police, alcohol was involved in the incident, with witnesses reporting seeing the boy under the influence.
"The 14-year-old was provided with a certain amount of alcohol. After interviewing a number of witness we have charged the mother," said Lt. Patrick Moriarty.
Paula Montgomery, 48, along with Peter Cooper, 50, have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
"There are still some things that we are looking at. We are waiting for the results from the autopsy," said Moriarty. "Once we have all of our facts and information we'll make a determination at that time if there are any more charges."
Montgomery and Cooper have returned to Orillia, according to police, and are scheduled to appear in a New York court Sept. 13.
