Police probe bizarre crash aftermath
TORONTO - A woman in her 40s is undergoing psychiatric assessment following a bizarre five-vehicle crash in North York.
The woman apparently tried to commit suicide after turning on the gas burners inside a home following the crash on Bayview Ave. north of Sheppard Ave.
Toronto Const. Wendy Drummond said the woman was driving south in the left-turn lane when she struck another southbound vehicle just before 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The collision then started a chain reaction crash involving three other vehicles.
A 65-year-old driver of one those vehicles was taken to hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.
The woman's vehicle then veered into a ditch on the east side of Bayview, police said.
She got out of the vehicle and fled to nearby Foxwarren Dr. where she walked into a home while the homeowner was taking out the garbage.
The homeowner was alerted by a neighbour about the intruder, who turned on the gas stove burners and tried to set her hair on fire.
She was taken into custody and transferred to hospital. Her injuries are not life threatening and she is now undergoing an assessment, police said.
