Cop faces perjury charge

Cop faces perjury charge

A Toronto police officer has been charged with perjury, accused of covering up his brother’s alleged involvement in the execution-style murder of multi-millionaire jeweller, Alexander Kucovic.

Const. Daniel J. Costa, 29, of 23 Division has a bail hearing tomorrow in Newmarket court.
Kucovic, 37, was pronounced dead in hospital within hours of being shot several times near his home around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 2. His body was found in the middle of the street on well-lit Grandvista Crescent, in an area known for million-dollar homes.

Within days of the murder, York homicide investigators were probing the possible involvement of Costa’s younger brother, Michael, court documents show.

Michael Costa hasn’t been charged in relation to the murder.

York homicide investigators first spoke with Daniel Costa about his brother on July 7, five days after the murder. More than two months after that initial talk, Daniel Costa was charged with perjury and freed on a promise to appear in court.
