Councillor wants to revisit idea of making Toronto a province
TORONTO - A Toronto city councillor thinks it's time to revisit the idea of making the city a province.Giorgio Mammoliti feels the city is getting shafted by the federal and provincial governments.
Mammoliti says he's just putting the idea out there to see what people think, but he believes the city would benefit from transfer payments from Ottawa.
He says that cash would give the city more breathing room and take programs on the brink of being eliminated off the chopping block.
Mammoliti points to affordable housing, infrastructure and child care, which he says would get much more financial assistance if Toronto was a province.
Former mayor Mel Lastman had the same idea in 1999, but had a change of heart a year later when he said it wouldn't work constitutionally.
