75,000 taxpayer dollars burned for incinerator party

Jumbo shrimp, sushi and mini sliders for 175 people: $11,469.50. Luxury portable toilets for guests to freshen up: $2,486. Miniature souvenir shovels: $5,136.82. Leaving a bad taste in taxpayers’ mouths: Priceless.

Shut out of the private party they paid for, Durham residents who opposed a controversial garbage incinerator may now add pocketbook injury to insult with news the groundbreaking ceremony cost more than $75,000.

The Aug. 17 event was to be “the best of the best,” according to the staff member charged with organizing it for regional chair Roger Anderson, a major proponent of the $272 million energy-from-waste facility. Kept under wraps by Anderson, the party’s cost and other details were uncovered through an access to information request.

Politicians and businesspeople at the invitation-only midday affair listened to congratulatory speeches in air-conditioned tents at the Clarington construction site.

“I’m appalled that they spent all those taxpayers’ dollars,” said Port Perry retiree Paul Woodcroft, who had protested outside the party. Opponents fear health risks and object to the cost of the GTA’s first new incinerator in 20 years
