Former Etobicoke principal stole $73K from student fund

| CityNews

A former principal has pleaded guilty to stealing $73,000 from a student fund over a four-year period.

Terry Baytor pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000. He was sentenced to an 18-month conditional sentence with 100 hours of community service and ordered not to return to the Etobicoke school.

“I’m very sorry for my actions and impact that they have had on my family and the institution,” Baytor told the court. But he didn’t explain why he took the money.

Baytor was the principal of Martingrove Collegiate Institute.

The fund included money collected from students who chipped in $75 each and from fundraising activities to pay for yearbooks and school activities.

The judge said it was a “colossal” breach of trust and not something a beloved teacher and administrator would do.

“Unfortunately when students and parents look back they will remember you stole from them,” the judge said.

Baytor has paid back the money. His offence doesn’t affect his pension, the court heard.
