OTTAWA - NDP leadership candidate Peggy Nash has snagged support from one of Jack Layton's former advisers on Quebec.
Pierre Ducasse, who ran for the NDP leadership prize in 2003, announced his endorsement for Nash at an Ottawa news conference Tuesday.
Ducasse is one of the authors of the Sherbrooke Declaration, the NDP's Quebec policy. He says Nash "understands" his home province and has the ability to unite people.
Nash, a Toronto MP, is one of nine competitors in the New Democrat leadership competition. Other contenders include former party president Brian Topp, deputy leader Thomas Mulcair, B.C. MP Nathan Cullen, Manitoba MP Niki Ashton, Nova Scotia MP Robert Chisholm, Ontario MP Paul Dewar, Quebec MP Romeo Saganash, and Nova Scotia pharmacist Martin Singh.
The NDP's leadership race will wrap up at a Toronto convention in March but there are growing complaints there are not enough debates in the competition, and the prairies and Newfoundland are not included in the discussion schedule.
Nash told reporters she is "disappointed" a debate will not be held in Toronto.
