A man was caught on video grabbing the poppy box sitting on the front counter of a Pizza Nova shop around 11:45 p.m. Monday on the The Queensway at Royal York Rd.
“I read the story in the Toronto Sun and felt terrible and wanted to replace the poppy box money collected. I’m donating $50 to the legion as a token of my appreciation to thank those who served for our freedom,” said the 47-year-old Toronto Sun reader.
Smith - whose grandfather served in World War II - said he wants his two children to grow up knowing the sacrifices war vets made to Canada.
“Stealing a poppy box is such a terrible thing. I felt badly for the heroes who started to save and protect us from the beginning and I’m grateful and lucky to be alive from war to do something like donating $50 is nothing compared to what vets have done for this country,” Bill Smith, 47, said.
Bob Hackett, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Winston Churchill Branch #3, was pleased to see something good come out of the stolen poppy box.
“It’s a tremendous help to us and I really thank him for making the gesture. We really appreciate all the money we’ve received from him and from the people of Toronto,” said Hackett, who served as a paratrooper in Germany with NATO in 1955-57.
Hackett say it’s not the first time a poppy box has been stolen.
