Woman found in Port Lands died from gunshot wound
Leanne Freeman, 23, died of a gunshot wound in Toronto early Tuesday morning.
The 23-year-old from Winnipeg was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday, on an isolated road in the Port Lands, lined with smoky power plant chimneys and stretches of scrubby bushes and trees.
A passerby made the 911 call and Freeman was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital with severe head injuries. She died hours later.
An autopsy conducted on Tuesday confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound.
Freeman had lived in Toronto for at least three years, often going back to visit Winnipeg, according to a close friend.
“She just wanted to be free from heartache and pain,” said Jem Calcutt, another of Freeman's friends. “She should be with us today, making the change she so badly wanted to make.”
Global News Winnipeg reports Freeman was facing drug charges in Winnipeg going back more than a year, and that a warrant for her arrest was issued in August when she did not attend her court date.
In a Facebook group dedicated to Freeman one friend wrote “she was just trying to start her life over too. Ya, so she spoke her mind, she shouldnt of got shot for that” (sic).
The s-curve of Unwin Ave., near Leslie St. where Freeman’s body was found was closed off by police Tuesday as forensic investigators scoured the rain-soaked area for evidence and canvassed businesses nearby. It’s unknown whether she was shot there, or was dumped and left for dead in the dimly lit industrial wasteland on the edge of Lake Ontario.
Freeman is the 42nd homicide victim in Toronto this year
