Cops arrest Congolese protesters

TORONTO - Toronto Police have arrested three people after calling in reinforcements to deal with Congolese protesters who brought traffic to a halt along University Ave.
Members of the Congolese community rallied around the world Tuesday in solidarity with opposition parties in the Democratic Republic of Congo, rejecting partial results in a Nov. 28 election that showed a lead for President Joseph Kabila.
About 250 people chanted and laying across the road and praying at University Ave. and College St., bringing traffic in the area to a standstill.
At one point, protesters at the U.S. Embassy threw dirt at Toronto cops and were arrested. They then marched along University Ave. to Queen's Park.
Protest organizer Alain Kolela, who came to Canada from the Congo 14 years ago, said those in his homeland are "suffering greatly" and econmically despite the country's abundance of natural resources.
Protesters want the ruling regime in Congo ousted, accusing it of being a puppet for other countries.
