Man dies in crash on Lawrence near DVP

A crash on Lawrence Avenue East at Curlew Dr., Dec. 23, 2011.
A 36-year-old man has died in hospital hours after a crash on Lawrence Avenue East near the Don Valley Parkway early Friday.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. when a pickup truck apparently T-boned a car on Lawrence at Curlew Drive, just east of the DVP.

Police say Sutharsan Thananayagam was driving eastbound on Lawrence and about to turn left onto Curlew when his car collided with the pickup at the intersection.

“One party didn’t take time or somebody misjudged the lighting here,” Const. Hugh Smith said.

Thananayagam was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital with head injuries and later died. The victim is survived by his wife Thuvarki Thananayagam and a 10-month-old daughter.

The victim was on his way to Whitby to open the Sunset Grill, a restaurant he co-owned, distraught relatives said.

Witness Chris Kamarilngos told CityNews,“It’s very hard to see something like that."

Lawrence was closed in both directions in the area, but reopened Friday afternoon
