Truck driver charged in crash that killed Toronto cop

Toronto Police officer Riccardo Torchia, 30, died at the scene of a fiery crash on Hwy. 7 near Hwy. 50 on Aug. 2, 2011, when his motorcycle crashed into a dump truck.

A Mississauga man is charged in the 2011 collision that killed an off-duty Toronto Police officer riding his motorcycle.
York Regional Police said Riccardo Torchia, 30, of Vaughan, who was assigned to Toronto’s 23 Division in north Etobicoke, died at the scene of the fiery crash on Hwy. 7 near Hwy. 50 on Aug. 2 when his motorcycle crashed into a dump truck.
Police said the westbound truck turned left into a private driveway on Hwy. 7. Investigators allege the truck turned in front of the oncoming motorcycle.
Torchia had been on the police service for about 2 1/2 years.
Arrangements were made for the suspect to surrender to police at 4 District station in Vaughan on Wednesday. After his arrest, police found a quantity of marijuana allegedly in his possession.
Jose Couto, 55, is charged with criminal negligence causing death and possessing marijuana.
