TORONTO - A bizarre standoff at a Whitby auto shop has ended peacefully after almost 28 hours.
Police confirmed the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody around 5 a.m. Wednesday.
The former mayor of Oshawa, John Gray, confirmed to the Toronto Sun that former city councillor Robert Lutczyk was the person police had surrounded.
Lutczyk is suspected of abducting Oshawa's city solicitor David Potts at gunpoint late Monday.
Potts was kidnapped outside his Courtice home and driven around until he managed to escape unharmed.
The investigation into the incident led police to the auto repair business where, around 2 a.m. Tuesday, the standoff began.
