Two men are in custody, and Toronto police are looking for a young woman in connection to the murder of aspiring rapper Anthony Spencer.
Twenty-three-year-old Spencer was gunned down inside a Scarborough recording studio on Brimley Road, near Lawrence, in the early morning hours of Jan. 21. A group of friends who were in the studio drove Spencer, a father of a three-year-old daughter, to Scarborough General Hospital and then took off.
Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux said Tuesday at a news conference that “two persons of interest” have been arrested over the past week on unrelated criminal offences, and police want a woman who was with them at the recording studio on the night of Spencer’s murder to come forward.
“This individual is either present for an offence that she had no idea was going to take place and didn’t consent to it, or she’s a willing participant in it,” Giroux said. “It’s difficult to say until we find out who she is.”
Spencer's homicide is connected to the three drive-by shootings in Malvern over the weekend, police confirmed Tuesday. But they declined to provide details. Supt. Kathryn Martin of 42 Division said the murder of barber Christopher Thompson at Malvern Town Centre on Jan. 24 isn't related to those incidents.
At 12:42 a.m. on Jan. 21, Giroux said two males and one female arrived by taxi and entered the underground recording studio at 799 Brimley. The woman is captured on surveillance video entering and exiting the recording studio several times to make calls on her cellphone.
Police also played a recording by a cab company of a call that the woman made and a gunshot can be heard in the background of that recording.
Spencer was shot once at close range at 4:32 a.m., and that firearm could be heard on this cab call, Giroux said.
The two men and the woman can be seen leaving in another taxi after the incident.
The woman is described as black with a light complexion, possibly biracial, five-feet tall and about 100 pounds. She has a petite frame and dark hair worn in a ponytail. She was wearing tight jeans with a jacket and hooded sweatshirt underneath. She was carrying a large dark shoulder bag that had two large pockets on the side.
Giroux advised that the woman to get a lawyer, and said if she comes forward he would expect murder charges would be laid against the two men.
He again urged Spencer's friends who were with him on the night he died to come forward and speak to police.
