North York boy drowns at Port Colborne beach

A 12-year-old boy from North York drowned at popular quarry beach in Port Colborne on Saturday.

It happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. at Sherkston Shores on Lake Erie.

Niagara regional police said the boy was swimming with two friends about six metres from shore, when he was seen struggling and went underwater. He didn't resurface.

A search and rescue team found his body soon after.

The boy’s family has requested that his name not be released.
