Inquest to examine death of teen crash victim

Inquest to examine death of teen crash victim

Reilly Anzovino
WELLAND — An inquest is set to begin today into the death of an Ontario teen who was being taken to an emergency room 20 kilometres from the scene of a traffic accident.
Reilly Anzovino, 18, died on Dec. 27, 2009, as the ambulance carrying her reached a hospital in Welland.
The emergency room in Fort Erie, five kilometres closer, had been closed as part of a controversial hospital restructuring plan.
Her family and others believe she may have survived if she had received help in Fort Erie.
The inquest is expected to last four weeks, and hear from 35 witnesses.
The Liberal government closed the emergency departments in the hospitals in Fort Erie and Port Colborne, both in the Niagara region, that year and put urgent care centres in their place.
