Police urge drivers to lock doors, hide valuables
"The thief will try door handles and look in the vehicle to find if there is anything to take," Const. Tony Vella told CP24. "The last thing you want to be is victimized."
With break-ins typically more frequent around the holidays, Vella appeared on CP24 Wednesday to deliver a few timely pieces of advice.
He said people should never leave valuables in plain sight and that includes things like house keys, which should always be kept in your pocket or purse.
"People leave their car keys and house keys on or around the passenger seat all the time, forgetting that their ownership, which is often in their vehicle, has their home address on it," he said. "That may lead to your home being broken into."
If your vehicle is broken into, Vella said it is important to report the incident to police even if nothing is taken.
"If your car is broken into we need to know about it," he said. "We will pay more attention and find out who is responsible."
