The TTC gave commuters a glimpse of the future on Friday, unveiling the sleek design chosen for a new fleet of streetcars.

The light rail vehicles,(LRV) were designed and built by Bombardier.  They are expected to start hitting the streets in 2013.

In total, 204 new low-floor streetcars will replace the old ones.

The new vehicles, which are based on European designs, will sport more seats and allow boarding from all four doorways.  They will also have air conditioning, larger windows and accommodate bicycles.

The TTC says considerable public consultation went into the final design decisions.

"This light rail vehicle is part of our new transit legacy," the TTC said on its website.  "We are committed to working with Torontonians and our current and future customers to make solid design decisions."

"In 2007, over 10,000 of you told us what you wanted to see in a new streetcar. We heard."

Here's the specifications:

Seating  capacity - 70

Standing  capacity - 62 (average) and 181 (maximum)
Length - 30.2 metres
Width - 2.54 metres
Height - 3.84 metres
