A three-year-old girl who fell from a sixth-floor apartment balcony remains in critical condition in a Toronto hospital, police said Friday.
Police officers continue to guard the Midland Avenue apartment where the girl suffered life-threatening injuries during some kind of incident early Thursday morning.
Investigators are still trying to figure out whether the girl's fall was accidental or if there was some kind of criminal element to it.
A 24-year-old woman who was removed from the apartment suite by police was hospitalized after the incident, but police didn't explain why. The woman remains in hospital under a police guard.
The girl and the woman share the same last name but police haven't confirmed their relationship.
Witnesses told CP24 they heard the girl repeatedly scream "Mommy," while neighbours reported hearing screaming inside the suite.
After the girl fell, the police service's emergency task force was called in because the woman, who was alone, wouldn't allow officers to enter the suite.
To enter the apartment, officers had to climb onto the woman's balcony from a neighbouring suite.
No one has been charged.
