2 arrested in Leanne Freeman's Port Lands-area murder

Victim Leanne Freeman. HANDOUT

Police have arrested two men in connection to the murder of 23-year-old Leanne Freeman, found shot to death last month.

At a news conference Friday afternoon, lead investigator Det.-Sgt. Brian Borg said Joseph Beauregard, 32, of Whitby, had been charged with first-degree murder and John Ash, 23, with accessory after the fact.

Beauregard will be in court on Saturday morning for a bail hearing. Ash made a brief court appearance Friday and remains in custody.  He'll be back before a judge on Monday.

A passerby found Freeman lying on the ground and bleeding in the industrial Port Lands area on Nov. 29. She was pronounced dead in hospital.

An autopsy later revealed she had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

A week later, a Kingston Road business owner found her personal belongings in a dumpster.

Police believe Freeman’s murder wasn’t random, and that she knew Beauregard. They said her murder had nothing to do with the fact she was a sex-trade worker.

A relative told CityNews that Freeman feared for her own safety in the days leading up to her murder.

"She was saying that she was scared and wanted to change her life," said her cousin Courtney Freeman
