A caregiver accused of sexually assaulting an 88-year-old Alzheimer’s patient at a Toronto long-term care facility is facing an additional charge as police continue to investigate the disturbing allegation.
James Brown, 57, was arrested Tuesday night after two co-workers walked in as he was allegedly assaulting the elderly woman in her bathroom at the Kensington Gardens seniors’ home at 45 Brunswick St.
Brown appeared in court Friday on a sexual assault charge. He was also charged with sexual exploitation of a person with a disability. His bail hearing was put off until next week and police want him kept behind bars until his next court date.
Brown is a personal support worker at Kensington Gardens, where he has been employed for seven years. His responsibilities include helping to bathe and dress residents.
Investigators say they’ve received calls from the concerned families of other residents, both past and present.
“There are some concerns and questions there, so we’re following up with some further leads right now,” Det. Dan Pravica said outside court on Friday.
Anyone with information can call police at (416) 808-1400 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.
