Police probing possible sightings of Mariam Makhniashvili

On the same day her father was sentenced to six years in prison for aggravated assault, police said they're looking into a reported sighting of missing Toronto teen Mariam Makhniashvili.

But after viewing surveillance video, the teen's mother says it's unlikely her daughter was seen at a local grocery store.

"It's not Mariam," Lela Tabidze told CityNews' Cynthia Mulligan Thursday.

Vakhtang Makhniashvili pleaded guilty earlier this year to three counts of aggravated assault. The charges followed two separate stabbing incidents last year.

Mariam Makhniashvili vanished in September 2009 and the only clue ever found was the then 17-year-old's backpack.

Toronto Police Const. Wendy Drummond said investigators are going through surveillance video after a reported sighting of the teen earlier this week but they can't confirm it was Mariam.

Drummond said police are constantly getting tips in the case and encourage the public to report any possible sightings of Mariam.

After Makhniashvili was sentenced, police took Tabidze to 53 Division to view the video.

"For me...it does not look like her," Tabidze said.
