Woman killed after tire flies off tractor-trailer, hits car

Police officers stand next to a car after a woman was killed in a collision on the QEW in Burlington on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011. Police say the woman was killed when a tire flew off a tractor-trailer and struck her vehicle.
A woman was killed when a tire came off a tractor-trailer and struck her vehicle Thursday morning, Ontario Provincial Police say.
An OPP spokesman said the woman's vehicle was northbound (Toronto-bound) on the QEW, north of North Shore Boulevard, when it was hit by a tire that flew off a southbound (Niagara-bound) transport truck and bounced over the centre median.
The woman was the lone occupant of the vehicle.
Emergency personnel were notified at about 6:45 a.m.
North Shore Boulevard's eastbound and westbound ramps to the Toronto-bound QEW are closed for a police investigation.
The closure may be in effect until noon.
Meanwhile, OPP are seeking witnesses to the collision to try to identify the tractor-trailer that lost its tire.
Police don't know if the trucker is aware of the incident because the truck didn't stop.
Anyone with information is asked to call 905-681-2511
