TORONTO - Toronto police have turned to YouTube for help in solving the Boxing Day abduction and sexual assault of a four-year-old girl in North York.Police posted the 1-minute and 44-second video on the popular video site on Friday asking for the public’s help in finding whoever took the girl from the Bathurst and Wilson area home in the wee hours of December 26 and sexually assaulting her in a nearby field before fleeing the scene.
The girl’s family – who were up from Connecticut visiting relatives living in the Charleswood Dr. home – discovered her missing between 3 and 3:30 a.m. They ventured outside to search for her, spotting her across the street in a neighbour’s yard.
A man was seen fleeing the scene, and has been described by police as between 19 and 20 with a medium build, between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-10 and was at time of the crime wearing a blue jacket sweatshirt, dark sweatpants or jeans and a striped, blue-toned toque.
In the short, nondescript video, det. constable Sandra Arruda, the lead investigator in the case, pleads for anyone with information about the abduction and assault to contact police. Missing from the video are any details of the crime, such as an image of the house the girl was taken from or a description of the suspect.
As of late Saturday afternoon, the video had 296 hits.
“Any little (bit) of information that could be provided to us would help immensely,” said Arruda, a Sex Crimes Unit sign hanging in the background. “If anyone has any information that you could provide to me, I’d greatly appreciate a phone call.”
Arruda then leaves the number for her direct line, as well as her email and the numbers for the Sex Crimes unit and Crime Stoppers.
While new to the world of cyberspace, Toronto police are using popular websites such as YouTube and social media more and more to solicit tips for investigations. Police posted a YouTube video on Friday of a suspect rifling through a victim’s jacket behind a desk at a furniture storie in Scarborough. They also posted video footage earlier in December of an assault on two male victim by a group of young men in side the lobby of a downtown condo.
