More than four mouths after Liu’s severed body parts started turning up in various spots in the GTA, her ex-husband and three sons held a small funeral service to remember her. Liu had left little mark on Canada in the 10 years since she fled China to escape its one-child policy.
It’s not clear why a funeral was delayed so long, but the reason may have been a long delay in obtaining travel documents for her ex-husband, Qing Shi Chang, and the younger sons.
Six nuns led the chanting in a traditional Chinese funeral ceremony at the Highland Funeral Home near Sheppard Ave. E. and Warden Ave. on Monday morning, attended by a small group of friends.
The ceremony was followed by a cremation service at the nearby Forest Lawn Crematorium and Masoleum, led by Liu’s eldest son from a previous marriage, Danny Dong Hao Liu, and Chang, with the two younger boys holding Liu’s photo.
The family showed little emotion and declined Torstar News Service’s request for an interview.
A woman’s severed right foot and head were first discovered at Hewick Meadows Park, near Mississauga Rd. and Eglinton Ave. W. on Aug. 16. Later, more remains showed up in Scarborough. The victim was identified as Liu a few days later.
Peel Police arrested Chun Qi Jiang, 40, Liu’s estranged ex-boyfriend, and charged him with second-degree murder.
Born and raised in Changle, in China’s Fujian province, Liu arrived in Canada with her eldest son in February 2002, and filed immediately for asylum, claiming she had been persecuted for giving birth to a second child with Chang, her second husband.
Liu worked at a body rub parlour before leaving in May to start her own Forget Me Not holistic
